Three Keys to a Successful Website

Designing and updating a website can be an arduous task. Keep these three guidelines in mind to run a successful site.

  1. Keep the "three-click rule" in mind. This says that 75 percent of website visitors will leave a site within three clicks if they do not find the information they seek. Continuously analyze and modify your site based on what people look for. In addition, the ability to perform categorized searches and a well-thought-out navigation system can play a major role in building a straightforward information delivery system.

  2. Read your site. Errors such as spelling and grammar mistakes and sentences that don't make sense are the kiss of death for a website. If the information you're trying to deliver is difficult to understand or comes off as anything less than first class, it's probably better not to offer the information. So, before you put new information on your site, make sure you read it a few times, and have a number of other people read it as well.
  3. Organize first, then present. Always stop to consider the needs of those who might not understand the information as easily as you. Design and plan for the lowest common denominator. Don't make visitors guess where to go -- build a site that guides them to the information.
