10 Ways to Become a Strong Leader
Having a certain title doesn't automatically mean a person will be a great
leader. Here are 10 ways to strengthen your role as a leader.
- Create a vision of what's possible for your self and your organization.
Get the creative juices flowing by reading inspirational books and articles,
meditating, journaling or daydreaming.
- Create a congruent environment. Make sure that what you think, say and do
are all the same.
- Start asking questions rather than solving problems. When you ask
questions, you actively seek information from front line workers and can use
that information to create something bigger for the organization and for
your employees.
- Create direction for people by asking them to follow.
- Create an innovative organization -- beginning with yourself. Begin doing
small things differently: the route you drive to work, the material you
read, etc. This will lead you to start thinking about other things
differently.
- Listen more than you talk. You will hear a lot that can help you re-think
strategies and reposition your organization for the future.
- Create quiet time for yourself and make it a priority. This will allow
the space and time needed for new ideas to come to you.
- Change the principles of your organization rather than trying to change
actions. When you change your principles, others will notice and their
actions will change accordingly.
- Honor and respect every member of your organization. Leaders don't carry
grudges -- they forgive easily and move on to build a bigger and better
relationship. They also look beyond the "look," the dress or the actions of
a person to see what really matters.
- Focus on what you want rather than what you don't want. Keep
distractions out of your mind and think only of the best happening.
